Woman Wireless satisfactionWith the Federal Court of Appeal rejecting a challenge by wireless carriers to delay the implementation of the wireless code of conduct, as of June 3rd, 2015 the code will apply to all wireless agreements.  This means that consumers, small business, and employees on an employee purchase plan (EPP) or a corporate individual plan (CIP) will be able to walk away from their agreement without paying any cancellation fee.

The Wireless Code was announced in June 2013 and as of December 2, 2013 all new contracts required the recovery of any upfront device subsidies over no more than two years.  This appeal rejection now permits users who entered a wireless contract before December 2, 2013 to get the benefit of the Wireless Code effective June 3.

If you’ve been waiting to upgrade to a new phone from your 3 year contract, maybe because you have a sticky key or a cracked screen or otherwise, your wait is over.  It will be interesting to see if the wireless carriers offer decent incentives to keep existing customers and win new business.  The back to school season always seems primed with good competitive offers as well.   In any case it is nice to have options and to bid farewell to the three-year commitment!
